It has to be said that women have far more choice now in their choice of career than they did even twenty years ago when girls were still encouraged to opt for the humanities rather than the sciences. There are now few limitations on what careers they can decide to go for and you are now likely to see as many female bus drivers, managers and Equity Release advisors as male ones.
However, many women still find it hard to enter the world of technology and science although this is changing now. Although barriers do still seem to exist, you are now much more likely to find IT programmers and solutions experts than a few short years ago.
Many companies have nothing against hiring women to their IT departments but some find a lack of suitable female candidates as the field is still male oriented. Others actively encourage the hiring of women as it brings diversity and a different approach to complex solutions.
Walk into any typical IT department and you will still find mainly men, although more and more women are choosing to study IT at this level. This does put some females off from entering this line of work as they may feel a little out on a limb being the only female there.
But in fact females can add valuable experience to IT projects and a mixed project team can be enhanced by having both sexes on board.
